The Australian Shepherd is a wonderful breed to live with, but unfortunately not a breed suitable for everyone. Although there can be quite some difference between two individuals do you have to remember that the Aussie originally was created as an unflagging workingdog, lying on the sofa watching life goes by isn’t enough for an Aussie; he needs daily exercise and activation. You should, on a generally basis, be able to set aside about one hour per day to walks and beside that time for play and training at least twice a week. It is also important to remember that walking in a leach isn’t enough for an Aussie; he must have the opportunity to run some of his energy off on his own. The Aussie though, is not an activation- alcoholic, he will do just fine if you for a short period of time do not have the ordinary time to exercise and activation; he will not turn into a destruction monster for that reason!

Even though many might think that it isn’t possible is it not a problem to have an Aussie in an apartment. It is an old myth that a garden is necessary for a dog, regardless of his need for activation. A garden does not make a dog happier, on the contrary. A garden can make people a bit lazy in regards to walking with their dogs: I can skip the walks he has the garden! But a garden is simply not enough; every dog needs new impressions every day. Living in an apartment forces you to walked with your dog at least 5 times a day and activate him on a daily basis.

Another thing worth to remember is that, although the Aussie may not have seen sheep for generations, are the herding instinct deeply ingrained in many Aussies. You must be prepared that there is a risk that this instinct can break through causing the dog to herd traffic, other dogs, children and so on. Aussies are furthermore quite curios dogs and likes to see what is around the next corner. A well-fenced garden (if you have one) is therefore a must if you wish to keep you Aussie in a responsible way.

In regards to the herding instinct does the Aussie posses a high portion of intelligent. It is necessary for him in order to do his natural work, outsmart the stocks reactions and controlling them without getting hurt himself. But just as clever as he is to outsmart a herd of sheep or cattle, just as smart is he to outsmart you! A consistent, but at the same time fair and loving, upbringing is therefore needed when training an Aussie. Another thing you should think about in this connect is that the Aussie is a breed that often can be sensitive to signals, meaning that he react strongly to the signals that we, perhaps with out knowing, is sending to him. This can be mistaken for shyness or aggression if people don’t approach in a dog-like fashion (close mouth, small eyes, squat with the side to the dog).

One of the other qualities the original breeder was breeding for was the guardian instinct. Most Aussies do thereby possess a great guardian instinct, and many Aussies have defended their families with their own life at stake. You should therefore be prepared that the an adult Aussie will show a great guardian instinct towards his owner and his things; a Aussie is normally not a dog will allow strangers to touch him when he is parked out side a store or in the car, you can also be sure that no man or dog will get near your bag if your Aussie is guarding it.

When all this has been said, it must also be said that the Aussie is a wonderful breed to live with. Nothing is more capturating than the Aussies energy and joie de vivre. It is a breed that simply is eternally cheerfully and it is almost impossible to get bored with an Aussie in the house! Besides this is it a dog with a golden mind, a gentle and easygoing temper in every kind of situation, never vicious or cantankerous. The Aussie is per nature very easy to train, so if you give your Aussie a proper training, you will be able to take him to almost everything and everywhere and he will not be off when he is loose. In short, he is the perfect companion for the active family!
