The
Aussie is recognized in the following combination of colors: self black,
black and tan, black bi (black and white) and black tri (black with both
tan and white markings). The black color should always exist in a deep,
shiny black without brown reflexes.
The vast majority of our Aussies are black tri. Black bi and
especially black and tan and self-black is combination seen more rarely
and will then exists more commonly among the workingdogs than showdogs. The
explanation could be that most people find white trim more
spectacular in the showring than a plan, solid coloured dog. Two examples of black tri can be seen below. The dog to the left has deep and shiny black hair without any brown reflexes. The dog to the right is another beautiful example of a black tri. He does not directly look like a tri tan on this picture, but if you take a look at the paws on his hind legs you will see small markings of white. He is therefore black tri and can transmit white markings to his puppies.
Below are shown two examples of black bi Aussies. The dog to the left does clearly show typical Irish Spotting (white Lassie-markings). The dog to the right does on the other hand looks almost like a self-black but is in fact minimal black bi as he has a small white spot on his chest (can not be seen on this photo). The white `moustache´ is due to age; he is 14 years old on the photo.
