Red is an incredible variable color. Besides the variation in markings of white and tan, is the color recognized in several tones from sorrel to such a dark red that the only way to identify the color of the dog is to look at the color of the nose; if the nose is red, the color of the dog is red and visa versa. The shades of the red color can vary too, both in the cold and warm spectrum. Accordingly to guidelines from ASCA (the Australian Shepherd Club of America), is the basis color preferred as being either levered or dark mahogany. All the dogs below are beautiful examples of the deep and warm red that many consider as the most wanted.

Red tri, meaning a red dog with both white trim and tan points, are the combination of colors we most often see. The two Aussies above and the Aussie below to the left are all red tris. The dog below to the left though does apparently looks like a red bi, meaning a red dog with white trim), but when you look at her close up is it possible to see two dots of tan visible above her eyes and tan beneath her tail. You can read the explanation to this phenomenon in Genetics.

Dogs that are red and tan and self-red, are somewhat more rare and is than often seen in lines used for working. The dog to the right is a beautiful example on a self-red Aussie.
